Do you find yourself cutting out people from your life that keep talking about alternative medicine?

Amina Motzer: I don't, because those people in my family or among my friends who still have warm fuzzy feelings about alternative medicine (the most you can have, in the absence of proof) know better now than to try and preach it to me.But when I was first diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, I can't count the number of people (mostly well-meaning, but of course completely ignorant of cancer) who pressed their alternative treatment of choice on me.I have to admit I was something of an alternatives enthusiast myself at the time, so I was determined there must be some other way than harsh conventional treatment, and I explored every avenue. My frantic research led me to the conclusion that not one case of cancer has been successfully treated by any unproven alternative 'treatment', ever. Reluctantly, I went with the treatments recommended by my oncologist. I have now been in remission for over 5 years and I'm fit and well. What the alties don't seem to understand is that we KNOW c! onventional cancer treatments aren't perfect; we just also know, because they have been tested and proven in double blind clinical trials, that they save a lot of lives and prolong may, many more, and so are our best chance. You're right about people forwarding links they haven't read or researched themselves. What's disturbing about alternative medicine believers is that they are so ready and willing to believe, they believe ANYTHING that anyone claims is an effective alternative treatment. As long as it's 'natural', it must be effective. Can't be said often enough: Q. What do you call alternative medicine that's been proven to work? A. Medicine.Funniest thing about the people pressing alternatives on me after my diagnosis was the by far the biggest group were urging me to read Jane Plant's book, Your Life In Your Hands, and follow the diet therein. Plant argues that breast cancer is caused by dairy, and urges a dairy-free diet for both prevention and cure. Now, I'd been a! vegan - no animal products of any kind, so definitely no dair! y - for several years before my diagnosis of advanced, aggressive breast cancer. And the really odd thing was that without exception the people pressing this book on me already knew that......Show more

Ron Keliipio: Ignorance is no excuse for poor health. You are the living proof that the treatment you are taking is not helping to improve your health. If you are really interested in improving your health I suggest you check the internet regarding Transfer Factor Plus of 4life Research. They are immune modulators and help improve your immune system. Do you know that cancers are mainly attributed to a weak or faulty immune system more than anything else. The treatment options available to you are also limited. Do you know that Russian scientists have named Transfer Factor Plus as 'the golden interleukin' as it is far superior to IL 2, the top cancer drug and does not create any side effects. Please note that TF Plus is not a medicine but is the world's best supportive o! r adjuvant therapy for any type of cancers. They have over 60 years of medical research to back the product and it is in use in many countries. Remember you can fool some people some times but you cant fool all the people all the time. The amazing thing with this product is that you are expected to feel an improvement in your general sense of well being in just 48 hours time which is the time the immune system takes to get activated. TF Plus has the ability to enhance the Natural Killer cell activity of the immune system, which incidentally is the immune system's first line of defense against cancer. Try it out as soon as possible and benefit from it....Show more

Mel Crapo: No, they mean well they just don't bother researching. My dad made me put "healing mud" on my wrist to try to heal a cyst. He was not malicious, just misinformed.I don't understand the mindset of "The best funded and researched medicines on earth just barely work, so this completely un-researched, ! unverified, and underfunded potion made by some guy in the basement of ! a mom and pop health food store will DEFINATELY work!", but it's clear most of their hearts are in the right place....Show more

Ermelinda Stalnaker: Excellent answer from lo_mcg. I'm hoping that one of the alt med fanatics would like to comment on this (self-styled cancer expert Tony I maybe?).All my thoughts are with the OP.

Gertrude Darke: Clyde, the Acia juice and how wheat grass cures cancer. Articles that have no scientific basis just hearsay. I find out soon if I need to find a drug trial so am I not against trying something n! ew.

Stevie Kizziar: Life's too short Max. I can understand your impatience with the Big Herba crowd.
