what is the role of visual arts in the Great Gatsby?

Olin Hallin: Edit: I meant something like how did the topic of visual arts like architecture, paintings, drawing sculpture, etc. play a part in the story? Was there a certain part in the story where any of these details came into effect?I already realize that the large and fancy design of Gatsby's house plays a part in him winning over Daisy at that point, but is there anything else?Another question I would like to answer is: what are some of the major trends and such of visual arts in the 1920s?If possible, how did these trends and such relate to the Great Gatsby?...Show more

Emeline Albracht: I think you have to go into the colors and the symbolism therein.

Somer Distilo: I think you're meaning 'visual imagery'.There is a lot of pathetic fallacy used to describe the mood -- that is, using seasons and weather. Since most of the book is set in Summer, it's hot and everyone is moody.E.G, it's raining at the funeral, which is sad, etc. etcAlso... The use of colo! rs is greatly used. Grey- Corruption, destruction, etc.Yellow (Gatsby's car) - like fake gold, worn out, not realWhite - purity...etc. etc... Fitzgerald has a lot of references to these, and also describing the scenery and surroundings.Basically, it sets the mood and foreshadows following events....Show more
